Position: Health & Safety Manager                                            Term:  One-year Full-Time Contract

Summery:

FAFN is looking for a motivated Health & Safety Manager, to coordinate, support and advise the Workplaces, Departments, Fort Albany First Nation on all aspects with regards to Health & Safety compliance. To establish, manage and monitor standards, processes, communications, training, and systems to ensure all responsibilities associated with Health and Safety within the Community and Projects are adhered to.

To provide a hands-on approach where necessary with inspections, audits, and implementation of Health and Safety processes and procedures within Fort Albany First Nation. This position also provides Health and Safety services to all First Nation communities that require assistance and health and safety development within their workplaces and communities.

Fort Albany First Nation will continue to advocate Health. Safety & Environment with neighboring Communities, will contract the services of Fort Albany First Nation to implement Health and Safety programs, as well as provide training to First Nation people and communities. Training such as First Aid CPR, WHMIS, Manual Development, Health and Safety policy development and other Health and Safety initiatives.

 

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Health, Safety and Environmental:

·         Manage the provision of a safe workplace environment without risk to health.

·         Manage and ensure all Health and Safety related policies (including contactors polices and procedures, rules and regulations are adhered to and are regularly reviewed, updated, and communicated.

·         Make sure Fort Albany First Nation meets its statutory and obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety, and welfare at work, including statutory training and reports.

·         Define and communicate with stakeholders. A clear process for risk assessments preparation.

·         Provide assistance, guidance and where required full support to Heads of Departments in completing Risk Assessments for all relevant activities, operations, and environments and ensuring a timely response to any Health and Safety enquires.

·         Ensure that all accidents are documented, investigated, and recommended improvements implemented.

·         Working with all departments and management, ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, safety inspections, risk assessments and working procedures are managed, and employees are aware of their responsibilities.

·         Implement and manage a system to document accurate Health and Safety and training records.

·         Manage a full programme of documented Health and Safety inspections, audits and checks.

·         Establish a structured programme of Health and Safety training throughout Fort Albany First Nation, including all employee inductions.

·         Liaise with external Health and Safety consultants in the provision of training programs and Health and Safety services to all First Nation communities when requested.

·         Form a Joint Health & Safety Committee.

·         Distribute minutes for the Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings. Ensure that all agreed action points are completed within deadlines.

·         Keep up to date with all aspects or relevant Health, Safety & welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes to the business.

·         Provide regular reports to the Risk and Regulation Committee regarding Health and Safety matters including the termly Accident Reports.

·         Advise, at planning stage, on risks associated with site development works and continued review through construction phase.

·         Work in the Community (one week per month) and from home. Attend special events in the community.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

  • At least three years recent and relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Qualified or equivalent certificate accreditation.
  • Professional approach to get the job done.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Ability to work co-operatively with others to complete task and implement process improvements.
  • Assist all other programs, within Fort Albany First Nation.
  • Reach out to First Nation communities and Organizations, to draft contract services for Health and Safety services.
  • Provide Safety training with all First Nations, and market Health and Safety services. Be a lead in promoting, advocating, Health, Safety and Environment within all First Nation.
  • Attend regional gatherings to promote HSE programming and services.
